Hello dreamers and goal setters! Wow, 2019 seems to be flying past! I can’t believe it’s February already! How are things going for you this year? Did you set any New Year resolutions for 2019?
It’s about this time of year that many find their resolutions are a distant memory. So, I know exactly what some of you are thinking right now! Your thought process will be leaping wildly from; ‘What New Year Resolutions are those!’ to, ‘Oh yeah, those New Year Resolutions … mmm, well it’s been very busy!!!’
One of my goals for 2019 is to better connect with you. To keep me on track, this month’s topic is about New Year resolutions, and why they invariably don’t work.
I’ll start by setting the scene! It’s a familiar scenario I’m sure you may relate to! You’re at the end of yet another year. The past twelve months have passed by in the blink of an eye. There are certain aspects of your life you want to change. The dawn of a new year feels the right time to do something about it. Those changes may include a focus on your health, finances, career or self-development.
You mentally set your resolutions! In fact, some of you might jot them down somewhere! You even start working towards achieving them. But very quickly you realise that the busyness of life is still there. The Dream Breakers may start to impact you, such as; self-doubt, overwhelm and stress. They can affect your ability to think clearly. They can result in a lack of motivation! It all ends up being far too hard! You lose momentum and guess what? You’ve not even reached the end of the first week of January! Does this sound like you? Well, you are not alone! Statistics suggest that 97% of resolutions are never accomplished. I believe unrealistic expectations and a lack of planning are why many fail to achieve. You’ve basically set yourself up for failure. Especially when you move from the familiarity of the routine to the unfamiliar non-routine. It’s amazing the number of people who continually repeat this cycle year in, year out. It’s why so many meander along feeling like they are in a rut, not moving forward as hoped.
Before you go beating yourself up. There are two positives to take from this scenario! 1/ You acknowledged that your life needed to change in some way. 2/ You started out with enthusiasm and good intent to make that change happen. But good intentions are not enough on their own! To SUCCEED you must plan your journey to achievement properly. Your plan must include realistic, structured goals. Complemented by a motivational vision board to act as an uplifting visual reminder of where you’re heading. And you need strategies to help you work through those Dream Breakers. Believe me, they will impact you when you least expect it.
The final ingredient is Action, Action, Action! Commit to this and you have the ability to achieve great things in your life! So, stop procrastinating! Make 2019 the year when you take back control!
